Drawn as seen from the Northern Hemisphere: a waxing Moon is lit on the right.
Reading the calendar
Each square shows the Moon at local noon for the place you choose, with the lit part in silver and the percentage of the disc that is lit. A day is labelled New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon or Last Quarter when that exact moment falls on it in your time zone, and the time is shown in the square. Choose any day to see its moonrise, moonset and the Moon's age in days since the last new moon. Move with the arrows or the month and year boxes; Print this month gives a one-page landscape copy, and the CSV has every day's figures for a spreadsheet.
Why your location matters
A phase happens at the same instant everywhere, but the date it lands on depends on your time zone: the Hunter's Moon of 26 October 2026 (04:12 UTC) is still the evening of the 25th in Los Angeles. The picture changes too. Seen from the Southern Hemisphere the Moon is upside down compared with the view from the north, so a waxing Moon is lit on the left. The calendar flips its drawings for southern places automatically; close to the equator a crescent lies tipped on its back, more like a bowl.
How it is calculated
Positions of the Sun and Moon follow Jean Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms and are worked out in your browser. Phase times match the US Naval Observatory's published 2026 times to within a minute, and the percentage lit is measured at local noon, as in the Naval Observatory's tables.
Two free tools from elsewhere for the rest of your time online.
Star-party sign-ups without the spam
Planetarium newsletters, eclipse-trip brochures and telescope-shop discount codes all want an email address. CleanTempMail gives you a free temporary inbox with no sign-up; it deletes its messages after three days, so the follow-ups fade like a waning crescent.
Found a bargain on binoculars at a shop you have never heard of? WebTraceCheck's free tools show when a domain was registered and how its security headers are set, and its disposable cloud browser lets you look around the site on a remote machine first.
Why does a day show 100% without saying Full Moon?
Near full moon the lit fraction changes very slowly, so the day before or after can round to 99 or 100%. Only the day that contains the exact moment of full moon gets the label.
Can I look at other years?
Yes. Type any year from 1900 to 2100, or step month by month with the arrows. Your location, week start and drawing settings are remembered on this device.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once the page has loaded, every calculation runs on your device, so you can check the calendar at a campsite without signal.
